Last Day of Summer

Today morning I woke up only to see it is the last day of summer. The temperature was +2 Celsius degrees. Tomorrow it is already autumn.

But the weather was beautiful for MyDailyWalk with Nuka. The signs tell you if there is about to come a road crossing on your running track.

I love these walks through the woods; no matter the season or weather.

Kemi is old industrial town.

But there are many other things too.

Also here people like to make the world look prettier.

The Kemi Chruch is right in the city and perhaps the most photographed church around the area. But in Kemi there is also another unique church. It is Veitsiluoto Church which has Cross of St. Peter on the top of it. It is for the memory of St. Peter. The Veitsiluoto Church locates 9 km to the south from the city center. You need a car or a bus drive to get there. The village is small and doesn't attract, hold or accommodate tourists. Neither does the church. But if you are on a holiday by a car or motor home, try to find it at google as "Veitsiluodon kirkko" and pop around to take a look! It is  just 2 km far away from the motor way.

Puzzle

Last July I got my loom and finally now -at the end of August- there was a puzzle on MyLibrary floor.

It was a puzzle we've made before... in a bit different way. Never at this style.

But at the end they all are the same -the looms-. They base on the same function; to be able to create the fabric.

I've met much bigger looms before so this design felt as a genius miracle to save some space.

I really like them and can not wait to start. Unfortunately other busy things are calling me so I still have no time to concentrate on MyLoom.

Meanwhile She is doing Her all to get Her entertainment out of it!

Play It Again

Sometimes you just think you need something but on some weird way it takes time to make it happen. I have needed a bag for CD's to be carried around at work for few years!!! Now I created my own design CD-bag.

It must be a padded bag to protect the CDs. And it must be opened and closed easily but safe and sure.

It also must be a bag that is easy to carry in hand. Here the closing system forms also a small handle to be hold. So many features that it is no wonder I have not put my hands on it before. Until now when I realized how I should make it to come true.

The bag is made to keep up its form that it is easy to pack it up again. It is made up exactly for 6 CDs.

Now I have it and I am proud of myself that I finally made it!

TheCat

I can only say this happened to this... Hope she can keep her teeth and claws away from it in the future...

DMC Folk Art Glasses Case

Years ago I got DMC counted cross stitch kit Folk Art Glasses Case as a gift. Later on a cat happened to it. I was so so sad because of that. I saved the case. Now when my heart has healed over the accident I decided to rescue it.

I made blue back side and lining for it. I added some velcro to keep it closed better. And I made small handle to be able to open it better in the car when driving.

Now it looks pretty again and I am happy.

My sun glasses fit in very well.

This is easy and good idea to make a phone case too.

Tenntrådsbroderier

Mona Callenberg wrote awesome book about tin thread embroidery Tenntrådsbroderier in Swedish on 1997 (Finnish: Tinalankapunonta). Unfortunately it is difficult to find information about Mona Callenberg or her book in English.

This is a book about traditional Sámi tin thread embroidery. If you have never tried it out but got curious and are experienced with embroidery, I truly can encourage you to buy this book at second hand. The book has very good informative pics and I am sure with the help of dictionary or google translator the basic secrets can be solved out.

Yes, I've done tin thread embroidery several years ago but I have no any pics. They were orders. I did just the embroidery for reindeer leather hand bags. But for sure I should do some in the future for myself too...

Gluten free Finnish Whipped Porridge

It may feel a bit weird. It may feel extremely odd. But it is our traditional food. It is Finnish Whipped Porridge. In Finnish we call it "vispipuuro" or "marjapuuro"... to me it -however- is "lappapuuro". On the areas with Swedish impact their name "klappgröt" for this Scandinavian delight has created one more word in Finnish language for this porridge originally made of lingonberries (mountain cranberry). Yep, that sour taste berry. No, this is not sour at all.

In Scandinavian diet we use a lot of berries because up in the north there are no fruits or many vegetables growing. Even 35 years ago such exotic delights like apples or bananas, not to mention water melons or pineapples, were rare and not available all year around at the shops. Wild berries have taken care of our health what comes to vitamins.

MyFavorite is Finnish Whipped Porridge. MySorrow has been that since 2012 when I got my coeliac disease diagnose I have not been able to find out how to make original Finnish Whipped Porridge as gluten free. With original I mean it just must be whipped to feel like foam and it must be able to split like a pudding. I have tried out many recipes. All they have been horrible like a goo that sticks into the roof of your mouth and makes you to feel like choke to it.

Why I just have not give up and just to discover something else good to eat? Because lingonberries do good to your bowels' health. They have many health benefits but this impact on guts is the most important reason why I should eat it.

And now I finally discovered the secret of gluten free original feeling Finnish Whipped Porridge with the help of DearL. So, here we go!

Finnish Whipped Porridge (gluten free)

Boil gently until soft and the berries begin to loose their color

5 dl lingonberries
5 dl water

Then sift the liquid and pulp. You can use spoon to pressure all the pulp out of berries.

You need 1½l of liquid. Measure how much you have lingonberry juice and add needed amount of water to get total.

Rinse the kettle you used to boil the berries. You don't need to dry it; only to get trash out of it.

Mix in the kettle

2 dl sugar
3 dl polenta
½ tea spoon salt

Add and start to mix and stir all the time

1½ l lingonberry juice you just made (you can use also milk or cream a bit with the water)

Boil gently until it gets thick and heavy. Then let it cool down until room temperature. Mix every now and then meanwhile. It takes several hours. You can also forget it there. When it has cooled down you need to whip it well to be a bit foam like by electric mixer. This polenta itself doesn't get very foamy but the composition changes a bit.

Place it in the fridge for few hours. It should turn out fixed and set.

We enjoy it as cold and with milk.

StarQuilt -tutorial (part4)

About a month ago I showed you how to make StarQuilt. At tutorial (part1) you learnt to draw the pattern and cut it all. At tutorial (part2) it was time to sew it all up. At tutorial (part3) I showed how to connect all the blocks together. Now it has came time to turn it all to be a padded blanket.

You need cotton wool for this; to make it all to become a padded blanket. If you need to connect some pieces together at any point, see the picture above to find out how to make the seam to be flat.

Use your connected blocks as patterns to cut the cotton wool and backside fabric. Here is block for hand part of my massage table so it needs to be small.

Fasten the cotton wool to the patchwork by sewing according to the star edges.

IF you are making just a normal patchwork quilt these blue notes are for you:

After connecting the front side fabric to the cotton wool cut the back side fabric. Then place the patchwork and backside fabrics against each others so that their fronts sides face each others. Sew the edge seams as the picture above shows. Leave 30-40 cm wide "hole" without sewing. Then turn the blanket's front side out through this hole.

When the quilt is turned up to right way make sure its corners are tidy. You can pin them to stay there where they should. Then close the hole by tiny invisible hand stitching. When the hole is closed up, pin all the edges to keep up their form. Sew the hem around approx 3-5 cm far away from the edge.

NOTICE: If your quilt is big, you can attach the backside to the front side by some decorate stitching here and there at this point.

Ta-dah! You just finished it!

BUT IF you make a massage table cover like I needed to do follow these instructions.

After fastening the cotton wool to the patchwork cut the back side fabric and fasten it to the front side and cotton wool fabrics like this. Here we don't turn anything upside down etc.

Cut and sew the side parts of the cover. If you are doing the massage table cover you know what I mean. (Unless you don't: the patchwork quilt is just as big as the levels of your table. You need the side parts to make it all to reach up under the table to get it fastened up.)

There is cotton wool between the front and back sides of the side parts. You need to sew a passageway for the elastic drawstring so remember to leave 2 cm hole to be able to get it through.

Place the elastic drawstring on its passageway. Safety pin is useful when doing it. Usually 2/3 is the right length of the elastic drawstring; if you wonder how much you need it. I had a lot of it (over 50 meters)  so I just took it as much as I evaluated it looked right and then cut it and made a knot with the other end.

After placing the elastic drawstring pin the other edge of the side part and sew it all together like on the picture.

Then pin the side and original patchwork together. Here is again the hand part cover of my massage table only to show it more clear in one pic. Then sew it all up and turn the sides out. Now you are finished with it.

To make the side hand cover parts to stay better there where they should; I did it in this way. I made just plain parts. To the edges I fastened the elastic drawstring like this. I know it is black but as I told; I have over 50 m of it so that's why it's black. :)

I know my massage table looks just fine without this cover because we re-upholstered it when I got it. But I really needed a padded cover for it because of TheCat. She loves MyMassageTable... Well, who would not???

But the table has faux leather upholstering. It doesn't resist cat's purring claws any better than real leather. So, all the time I must have hide the massage table under a thick rug when it has not been in use to avoid the damages on it.

Now it finally has my own design brand new padded cover that doesn't mind about purring cat. And we all are happy! So is the nature; old used massage table got a new life by re-upholstering and new cover to protect it made of old curtains and sheets. I can only image how much nature resources would have been wasted if this massage table had ended up to dumping ground and I had bought brand new massage table. Not to mention how much more it have costed me. For the cover I needed to buy only the cotton wool which cost approx 26€.

Lambert's Birds of Garden and Woodland

This is really getting very interesting. Meaning this recycling project to use old abandoned books by the library for my card making. Meaning the books the library sells out to make more room for new ones. Meaning the old boring abandoned books none wants to read anymore. Today I noticed I have learnt a lot with this project about the authors or illustrators I'd otherwise perhaps had never crashed at.

This time I used Lambert's Birds of Garden and Woodland by Alan F. Mitchell. The book is illustrated by Terence Lambert. It was published in Finnish already on 1977. I've seen art work of Terence Lambert but I actually never knew it was him.

The picture of Eurasian Sparrowhawk is from the book. The apple tree blossoms are from a free commercial mail I received last spring. This card is for DearB's birthday; to be given with PaddedPenCase. Today was time to make her card. The card was inspired by the incident I saw today. I was just about to go for a walk with my dog. When we stepped behind the house towards the street we saw Eurasian Sparrowhawk to catch a House Sparrow. It all happened right behind MyAppleTrees. I've seen Eurasian Sparrowhawks many times in MyGarden but never to catch anything.

PersonalizedPenCase

It seems we are having pen case days! But this is a great idea to get a bit more organized.

My own design for PersonalizedPenCase. I used chain stitches to embroider the pen cases to find out easily what is in.

PaddedPenCase

I made something special with love for DearB who has her birthday soon.

It is something she can carry around.

She can open it...

...and put some important stuff in.

It is my own design two sided PaddedPenCase
for a friend who works as an elementary school teacher.

I used old fashion fabrics from GrannyTimes and created a story looking outfit.
